From Peterborough to Princeton
Oliver, a native of the Monadnock region, was born in Peterborough and he grew up in the sleepy town of Richmond. In 2012, Oliver graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. For eight years, he worked in politics and national security, primarily nuclear weapons policy. During that time, Oliver earned a master's degree with distinction in War Studies from King's College London.
From "War Studies" to Juris Doctor
When Oliver became aware of a particular criminal prosecution which was wrongful and unjust, he came home because he realized he didn’t need to live in the big city to fight for the little guy and for justice.
Oliver earned his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School in 2023 (Go Blue!), where he was a three-year recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship. While in law school, instead of returning to Washington, Oliver spent two summers interning for Richard Guerriero. During that time, before he even finished law school, Oliver was working in court with Richard gaining invaluable experience, including in a jury trial and in multiple complicated federal sentencing hearings.
In one instance, he leveraged his studies to help draft an innovative evidentiary challenge to the federal government’s use of blockchain analysis in a complex federal trial. Another time, without prompting, he spent an afternoon in a dusty library going through microfiche to help Ted track down old news stories relevant to a criminal case. Considering Oliver's great work for the firm and his excellent advocacy, research, and writing, Lothstein Guerriero offered him a position at the firm before he even started his last year of law school.
Oliver's Practice
When we see a lawyer on TV, they are always in the courtroom, because that's the glamorous part. But that's not where cases are won and lost. Most of the time, cases are won or lost based on many long hours of reading, analysis, investigation, legal research, and legal writing. For example, there is so much federal criminal law, the Heritage Foundation noted that even the US Department of Justice failed in an effort to list all of them. For that reason, we are very lucky to have Oliver in our corner. He has the patience, tenacity, curious mind, and "dog with a bone" persistence that has enabled him to exhaustively research and aggressively litigate cutting edge topics for our cases and clients including:
- the law relating to cryptocurrency transactions
- the U.S. Supreme Court's major questions doctrine
- First Amendment issues
- The application of the Daubert case (standards for the admission of scientific evidence) to cutting edge technology.
